Sony's PlayStation Portal, a handheld companion for the PS5, resembles an expanded DualSense controller with an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen built into the center. It transforms your PS5 into a portable gaming system by streaming games directly from your console at up to 60fps. The controller retains all key DualSense features, including haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a touchscreen that replaces the traditional touchpad. You can even use the Portal outside your home, provided you have a highly stable and fast internet connection. Note that the Portal is not a standalone gaming device—it acts exclusively as a remote player for the PlayStation 5, so a PS5 is required for operation.

You no longer need a PS5 to enjoy games on the PlayStation Portal. Instead of solely streaming from a $500 console to a $200 handheld, Sony now allows users to stream games directly from the PlayStation Plus cloud service. With recent beta updates introduced in April, Portal users can connect either to their PS5 or directly to Sony’s cloud servers. Opting for the latter gives access to a library of over 120 titles, including Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 3 Remake, The Last of Us Part 1 Remastered, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Please note this feature requires a subscription to the highest tier of PlayStation Plus, which at $18 per month offers a more affordable alternative to purchasing each new game individually.

It’s worth noting that the PlayStation Portal isn’t the only method for streaming PS5 games over Wi-Fi at home. Alternatives like the PS Remote Play app, available on mobile devices and handhelds such as the Steam Deck, can replicate some of its functions. However, setup is typically more complex, and you may miss out on certain DualSense features.

PlayStation Portal Review by Seth Macy

"The PlayStation Portal completely won me over, despite my initial skepticism. It offers a far superior experience compared to using a phone with an attached controller, and its performance exceeded my expectations. I truly appreciate the flexibility it provides, letting me play my PS5 anywhere with reliable WiFi—especially useful when my family is using the TV, often for Nintendo Switch. While it's not a standalone device and absolutely requires a PlayStation 5 to function, the main drawbacks are its inability to connect to WiFi networks that need browser authentication and the lack of Bluetooth audio support. Despite these limitations, the Portal remains the best available solution for PlayStation Remote Play. Without those two caveats, I’d consider it an essential accessory for any PS5 owner who enjoys handheld gaming—or has to share the living room TV."
