Anbernic suspends US shipments over tariffs

Nov 06,25

Retro gaming hardware manufacturer Anbernic has temporarily halted all U.S. shipments of its handheld consoles.

As first reported by The Verge, the company cited "recent changes to U.S. import tariffs" for the suspension, advising customers to "opt for products stocked in our U.S. warehouses that remain unaffected by customs duties." All orders requiring shipment from China have been paused indefinitely.

The company is renowned for its affordable retro handheld consoles that emulate classic Game Boy systems. Typically, Anbernic fulfills initial orders directly from Chinese factories before distributing additional inventory through American warehouses.

While Anbernic's online store typically offers shipping options from either the U.S. or China, certain products like the RG CubeXX and RG 406H models - available only from Chinese stock - have effectively disappeared from the U.S. market.

This development follows recent U.S. tariff increases reaching 145% on Chinese imports, with potential tariffs on electric vehicles climbing as high as 245% when combined with existing duties. While some manufacturers may absorb these costs, most tech companies have been passing the increases to consumers. The gaming sector has been particularly affected, with rising prices already impacting products like Nintendo Switch 2 peripherals and gaming laptops.

Anbernic stated it's currently "evaluating potential solutions" for customers facing unexpected customs charges during this "period of regulatory adjustment."

These market changes come as Nintendo recently showcased its Switch 2 system in an extensive 60-minute presentation. Though U.S. pre-orders were initially scheduled for early April, tariff uncertainties in both the U.S. and Canada forced Nintendo to postpone pre-orders until April 24. While maintaining the $449.99 console price point, Nintendo has increased pricing on most Switch 2 accessories.
