Steam Player Numbers Soar Post-Patch 8

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) rolled out its highly anticipated final patch, concluding the RPG’s remarkable journey. On April 15, 2025, Larian Studios launched Patch 8, the game’s last major update. This milestone drove a significant increase in players, pushing BG3 just outside Steam’s top 10 most-played titles, with concurrent players rising from roughly 60,000 to over 169,000 at the time of writing.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke shared on Twitter (X) on April 22 that the player surge followed Patch 8’s release. He highlighted the game’s robust mod support, which allows the studio to shift focus to their “next big project.” Reports confirm Larian Studios will move away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) universe to pursue an original venture.

As a result, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, owners of D&D, will advance the Baldur’s Gate series without Larian Studios. They are now exploring partnerships with other studios for a potential Baldur’s Gate 4.

12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and Beyond!

Announced in November 2024 via a Steam blog post, Patch 8 has been in development for months. The update introduces 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play functionality, and more. Larian Studios detailed the patch’s contents on BG3’s website, offering an extensive list of bug fixes and combat balance tweaks compared to their November 2024 update, ensuring the game’s final version is polished to perfection.
