Buy Original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Before Switch 2 Launch
During Nintendo's April Direct, they unveiled a wealth of information about the upcoming Switch 2, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the start of preorders in the U.S. While the console's price was somewhat anticipated, the launch prices for first-party Switch 2 games raised some eyebrows, with Mario Kart World set to retail at a hefty $80. Additionally, Nintendo announced a new range of Switch 2 accessories, which have seen price hikes since their initial reveal.
Of particular interest to me was the Switch 2 Pro controller, now priced at $85. As someone who already owns multiple Switch Pro controllers, I was relieved to learn from Nintendo's developer interview that the original Switch Pro controller will be compatible with the Switch 2. This means I won't need to purchase the new version, saving me a significant amount of money.
Where You Can Still Buy Switch Pro Controllers
Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
If you're considering upgrading to the Switch 2, you might be tempted to get the new Switch 2 Pro controller. However, it's not essential for most games. If you already own a Switch Pro controller, you can continue using it with the Switch 2, saving you up to $80 that you can spend on new games. For those without a Pro controller yet, the original model is still available at a more affordable $69.99.
It's worth noting that these older controllers might sell out as the Switch 2 launch approaches, making way for the new model. Amazon currently has limited stock, primarily offering third-party alternatives. Besides the Pro controller, Nintendo confirmed that the original Joy-Con controllers will also work with the Switch 2, though we generally recommend the Pro controller for a better gaming experience.
When Will the Switch 2 Pro Controller Be Available?
If your heart is set on the new Switch 2 Pro controller, you'll need to wait until the console's launch on June 5. Preorders for the console and its accessories, including the Switch 2 Pro controller, will begin on April 24. Keep in mind that the Switch 2 Pro controller is exclusive to the Switch 2 and won't work with the original Switch.
Preorder listings for the Switch 2 Pro controller are already appearing at Walmart and Best Buy, though without specific preorder dates. Walmart also features listings for upcoming Switch 2 games that will soon be available for preorder.
