Civilization 7 VR Exclusively on Meta Quest 3

Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 (Civ 7) is making a bold leap into virtual and mixed reality, exclusively available on Meta Quest 3 and 3S. Announced on February 8, 2025, during the Civ World Summit Event, this marks the franchise's first foray into VR and MR gaming, as confirmed by 2K Games and Firaxis Games.

Dennis Shirk, the Executive Franchise Producer for Civ 7, expressed his enthusiasm on 2K's website, stating, We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!

Chris Pruett, Meta's Director of Games, shared his confidence in the project, saying, With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality. Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans.

While Civ 7 will be available on various PlayStation consoles, the VR version will not be released on PSVR2 at this time.

Board-Game Like Construction and Online Multiplayer

Civ 7 VR introduces a unique Command Table where players can strategize and play, offering an immersive experience reminiscent of a tabletop game. Players can zoom in to inspect buildings and units closely or survey the entire world from above.

The game supports both virtual and mixed reality, allowing seamless switching between modes. In VR, players find themselves in a grand museum overlooking a personalized vista for their chosen leader. In MR, the Command Table integrates with the player's real-world environment.

Civ 7 VR offers diverse gameplay modes, including single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer, accommodating up to four players using Meta Quest 3 or 3S. Players can challenge AI opponents or compete against friends, all while seeing each other as their chosen world leaders at the Command Table. Online multiplayer requires both a 2K Account and a Meta Account.

Firaxis Games Respond to Player Feedback

Following the early access period of Civ 7, Firaxis Games has actively addressed player feedback. Since its launch on February 6, 2025, for Deluxe Edition and Founder’s Edition purchasers, the game has garnered mixed reviews on Steam, primarily due to UI challenges.

In response, Firaxis Games is committed to enhancing the user experience. Their focus includes making UI interactions more intuitive, improving map readability, and refining the overall polish of the game. They also plan to introduce community-requested features such as team-based multiplayer, a broader range of map types, and more.

A quality-of-life update is scheduled for March, which will address UI adjustments, AI balance, diplomacy, crises, and additional bug fixes.

Civilization 7 VR is anticipated to launch in Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, though a specific date remains unannounced. Meanwhile, Civilization 7 is currently in early access and will officially launch worldwide on February 11, 2025, across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
