Crysis 4 ‘On Hold’ as Developer Crytek Announces Layoffs Affecting Up to 60 Staff

Feb 27,25

Crytek, facing challenging market conditions, announces layoffs impacting approximately 15% of its workforce, totaling 60 employees out of 400. While the company's successful title, Hunt: Showdown, continues to grow, Crytek states that maintaining its current operational structure is financially unsustainable.

Despite pausing development on Crysis 4 in late 2024 and transferring staff to Hunt: Showdown to reduce costs, further restructuring proved necessary. The layoffs affect various development teams and support services. Crytek assures affected employees will receive severance packages and career support.

In a statement from founder Avni Yerli, the company emphasizes its commitment to Hunt: Showdown's continued growth and expansion, along with the ongoing development of its CRYENGINE. The statement acknowledges the difficult decision but expresses confidence in Crytek's future.

The news follows previous reports of a canceled Crysis Next project, a battle royale-inspired title, which was scrapped in favor of Crysis 4, announced in January 2022. Crysis 4, however, remains on hold.

The Crysis series, renowned for its visually stunning graphics and demanding system requirements (famously leading to the "But can it run Crysis?" meme), has not seen a new mainline entry since Crysis 3 in 2013. While remasters have been released, the future of Crysis 4 remains uncertain following this recent announcement.
