Apr 12,25

In the latest wave of "here comes a new remake" news—or, if you're more optimistic, "here comes another Stephen King movie" news—a brand new adaptation of "Cujo" is set to sink its teeth into audiences. Netflix is gearing up to produce this new film version of Stephen King's chilling tale, with Vertigo Entertainment founder and producer Roy Lee on board to bring it to life. However, the project is still in its early stages, with no writers, directors, or cast members attached yet.

Originally published in 1981, King's novel "Cujo" was swiftly adapted into a cult classic horror film in 1983 by screenwriters Don Carlos Dunaway and Barbara Turner, and directed by Lewis Teague. The gripping story centers on a determined mother, portrayed by Dee Wallace, who faces a harrowing ordeal to protect her young son from a rabid dog. Trapped in a car with a dead engine, they must battle for survival as Cujo, once a sweet pet now turned deadly after being bitten by a rabid bat, relentlessly stalks them. The intense heat and the looming threat of heatstroke add to the suspense.

"Cujo" is just one of many Stephen King stories that have successfully transitioned to the big screen over the years. Recently, there's been a notable resurgence of King adaptations. Oz Perkins’ take on King’s short story "The Monkey" was released in February, and fans can look forward to a Glen Powell-led adaptation of "The Running Man" and JT Mollner’s unique spin on "The Long Walk," both also produced by Roy Lee and Vertigo, later this year. Additionally, HBO is set to launch the "IT" prequel series "Welcome to Derry." Meanwhile, the iconic horror film "Carrie" is being reimagined as an eight-episode series on Prime Video, helmed by horror maestro Mike Flanagan.

Stephen King enthusiasts have been feasting on a rich menu of adaptations lately, and with the upcoming "Cujo" remake, there's even more gourmet horror on the way.
