Dead Space Fans Slam $35 'Free' Skate Character Cosmetics

Fans of Dead Space have expressed dismay at the price tag for cosplaying as series protagonist Isaac Clarke in EA’s free-to-play Skate, which is currently in early access.

The new Isaac Clarke bundle in Skate includes a homemade-style cardboard costume for your skater, a themed skateboard deck, the Necro Stomp emote, and a collection of stickers. It is priced at 3,350 San Van Bucks—the game’s premium currency.

A pack of 2,800 San Van Bucks costs $25, while a 500 San Van Bucks pack is $5. Simply buying these leaves players 50 San Van Bucks short, requiring an additional 500-pack purchase ($5). This brings the minimum total to $35. (At least a free USG Ishimura T-shirt is also available.)

While Skate is a free-to-play title supported by microtransactions, Dead Space fans have reacted to the bundle’s cost with disbelief. Many have compared its price to that of the franchise’s full games.

Currently, the original Dead Space trilogy is available on Steam for $20 per title, though individual games have dropped to as low as $4 during sales. The acclaimed 2023 Dead Space remake is listed at $60, but has been discounted to around $12.

Compounding the frustration is the fact that, for the foreseeable future, EA has placed the Dead Space franchise on hold. Plans for a brand-new Dead Space 4 or a follow-up remake of Dead Space 2 appear to be shelved, with developer Motive reassigned to the Battlefield series. Isaac Clarke, meanwhile, is now limited to cameo appearances in other games like Fortnite and Battlefield 2042.

In a Reddit post titled “The state of Dead Space,” user IllustriousReveal962 wrote: “Let’s hope that one day Dead Space will reach a state as an IP where it isn’t solely relegated to being a skin in a mediocre always-online game to boost microtransactions.”

“You could buy three Dead Space games with that money (and probably three copies of Skate),” noted another fan, Diogo Rodriguez, in a post on X. User cayo0663 added, “Dead Space 2 remake got cancelled and now we get this.”

EA’s Dead Space and Skate franchises share some history. A stylish Isaac Clarke skin and a sci-fi skateboard were unlockable for free via cheat code in Skate 3. The 2023 Dead Space remake, meanwhile, featured an in-game Easter egg for a fictional “Skate 3000.” Many fans feel this crossover should have been a positive continuation—just not at such a steep price.
