Prepare, Guardian — Bungie has revealed exciting plans for its sci-fi shooter, Destiny 2, featuring two new expansions, seasonal updates, and core game enhancements for both paying and free players, all under the banner of the "Year of Prophecy."

The Year of Prophecy introduces four major content updates, including two paid expansions and two significant free updates, marking a first for the game.

Rite of the Nine, a reimagined dungeon experience, is now available to all players at no extra cost. While veterans may recognize dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep, expect fresh challenges and updated weapons as you reconnect with Orin.

On July 15, the new expansion, Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, launches, kicking off a multiyear storyline. This paid expansion reintroduces the Nine, enigmatic entities predating the Traveler, spotlighting new ally Lodi and Warlock Vanguard, Ikora.

The expansion unfolds on Kepler, a new destination designed for deep exploration, puzzle-solving, and player-driven discovery, inspired by Destiny 2’s dungeons. Expect new enemies, weapons, gear, and unique destination-specific abilities.

Also on July 15, major core game updates will enhance armor and gear systems for richer buildcrafting and introduce the Portal, a new activity selection screen.

"Players can seamlessly choose between Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the new Solo Ops," Bungie shared. "Fireteam Ops and Pinnacle Ops focus on quick team-based action and extended cooperative play, while Solo Ops cater to solo players seeking short, self-contained sessions.

"With 50 new modifiers, players can customize gameplay for greater challenges and tailored rewards, while curated activity rotations keep the experience fresh."

Pre-order bonuses for the expansion include an instantly unlockable Exotic Ghost and Legendary Emblem. Full details are listed below:

The Year of Prophecy Collector's Edition is sold out, with no further pre-orders available for the physical edition.

On September 9, the Ash & Iron update launches, followed by the second expansion, Renegades, on December 2. The Shadow & Order update arrives March 3.

Destiny 2: Renegades draws inspiration from the "legendary Star Wars universe," blending Destiny’s unique storytelling and gameplay with iconic sci-fi themes.

This content rollout follows a challenging period for Bungie, which laid off 220 staff members — 17% of its workforce — in July 2024, following 100 layoffs less than a year prior.

Bungie is also working on Marathon, revealed in May 2023 as a reboot of its classic franchise. IGN’s hands-on preview noted: "After experiencing Marathon in its alpha state, I’m confident it will satisfy Bungie’s PvP fans. Here’s hoping it excels on PC and consoles in September."
