Disney’s Snow White Remake May Face Uphill Battle to Break Even After Sleepy Start at the Box Office

Disney's latest live-action remake, *Snow White*, directed by Marc Webb, known for *The Amazing Spider-Man* series, faced a challenging start at the box office. The film opened with a domestic total of $43 million, making it the second highest debut of 2025 so far, only surpassed by *Captain America: Brave New World*. Despite topping the charts this week, *Snow White* fell short of expectations and did not match the opening weekend earnings of other Disney remakes such as *Dumbo* ($45 million in 2019), *The Lion King* (over $100 million in 2019), *Beauty and the Beast* (over $100 million in 2017), *The Jungle Book* (over $100 million in 2016), and *The Little Mermaid* (over $100 million in 2023).

Internationally, *Snow White* also had a modest start, earning $44.3 million over the opening weekend. This brings the global box office total to $87.3 million, according to Comscore estimates. The film, starring Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, reportedly cost over $250 million to produce. Given its opening performance, *Snow White* faces a significant challenge to break even, particularly when factoring in marketing expenses.

However, there is a glimmer of hope for *Snow White*. Disney's *Mufasa: The Lion King*, a prequel to the 2019 *The Lion King* remake, started with a domestic opening of $35.4 million but went on to earn over $717 million worldwide. Disney is likely hoping for a similar 'sleeper hit' success story with *Snow White*, especially as questions continue to swirl around the performance of *Captain America: Brave New World*, which has grossed $400.8 million globally ($192.1 million domestic and $208.7 million international) after six weekends.

IGN's review of *Snow White* awarded it a 7/10, praising the film for meaningfully adapting its original source rather than merely mimicking it. As *Snow White* navigates its box office journey, Disney remains optimistic about its potential to resonate with audiences in the long run.
