The excitement began when the game was listed for wishlisting on Steam on April 1, followed by its first official gameplay teaser on April 2. Initially introduced in 2022, it wasn't until late 2024 that Jagex invited players to sign up for alpha testing for a "new survival game set in the RuneScape universe." The game's official reveal as RuneScape: Dragonwilds came on March 31, 2025.

Jagex has shared an exciting early access roadmap for Dragonwilds, detailing the enhancements and additions players can expect. A standout update is the introduction of Fellhollow, a new region suspended between life and death, ruled by the soul-eater dragon Imaru. This area is influenced by the wild anima of Ashenfall and the cursed energy of the Underworld, and players will explore it alongside the iconic RuneScape character, Death.

New quests, lore, gear, and music will enrich the game, alongside new skills for magic, ranged, and farming. Players will also encounter new enemy types such as Lesser Dragons, equipped with new dragon slayer gear. Additionally, a hardcore mode and creative mode will be introduced, with ongoing improvements promised throughout the early access period.
