Elden Ring fans consider the Tree of Erd to be a “Christmas tree”

Reddit user Independent-Design17 proposed a fascinating connection between Elden Ring's Erdtree and the Australian Christmas tree, Nuytsia floribunda. Superficial similarities exist, particularly when comparing the smaller Erdtrees in the game to Nuytsia. However, deeper thematic parallels have also been noted by fans.

In Elden Ring lore, the Erdtree guides the souls of the deceased, explaining the catacombs found at its base. Interestingly, Nuytsia holds similar spiritual significance in Australian Aboriginal culture, considered a "spirit tree" where each flowering branch represents a departed soul. Its vibrant color is linked to the sunset, the perceived destination of spirits.

Further bolstering the comparison is Nuytsia's semi-parasitic nature; it draws nutrients from neighboring plants. This resonates with a popular fan theory suggesting the Erdtree is parasitic, having overtaken the roots of an ancient Great Tree, the original source of life. However, game translations have clarified that references to a "Great Tree" are actually misinterpretations of the Erdtree's own "Great Roots."

Ultimately, whether these striking parallels between Nuytsia floribunda and the Erdtree are deliberate design choices or coincidental remains a mystery, known only to the developers at FromSoftware.
