A medical investigation into the tragic passing of Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman has shed light on the circumstances surrounding his death, revealing that he likely died one week after his wife, Betsy Arakawa, succumbed to hantavirus (via Variety).

The New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator, led by Chief Medical Examiner Heather Jarrell, has provided an update on the couple's deaths, which were initially considered suspicious in a search warrant issued last month. The investigation has concluded that Hackman, aged 95, passed away due to cardiovascular disease, with Alzheimer’s disease also contributing to his demise.

It is believed that Arakawa, aged 65, died on February 11, 15 days before the discovery of their bodies in their New Mexico home. According to the CDC, hantavirus is a severe and potentially fatal illness primarily spread by rodents such as mice and rats.

Sheriff Adan Mendoza shared insights from a recent news conference, where security camera footage showed Arakawa visiting a local Sprouts market and CVS on the day of her death. She also had a conversation with a massage therapist that same day. Hackman's pacemaker recorded its last activity on February 17, indicating he passed away one week after Arakawa. The couple, along with one deceased dog, were found in separate rooms with no evidence of a gas leak. Subsequent autopsies confirmed negative results for carbon monoxide poisoning.

The news of Hackman and Arakawa's deaths sent shockwaves through the film community when it broke on February 27.
