GTA 6 Map Mod in GTA 5 Taken Down by Take-Two, Creator Says It Was 'Too Accurate'

The modder known as Dark Space, who developed a playable version of the Grand Theft Auto 6 map within Grand Theft Auto 5, has halted his project following a copyright takedown notice from Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games. Dark Space's mod, which utilized leaked coordinate data and official trailer visuals from GTA 6, became popular among fans eager for any glimpse of the upcoming game set to release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S this fall.

The situation escalated when Take-Two issued a copyright strike against Dark Space's YouTube channel, where he had shared gameplay footage of his mod. Faced with the potential termination of his channel due to multiple strikes, Dark Space preemptively removed all download links to his mod, even though he hadn't yet been directly asked to do so by Take-Two. In response, he posted a video on his channel criticizing Take-Two's actions and hinting that the accuracy of his mod's representation of GTA 6's map might have been the reason for the takedown.

In a subsequent interview with IGN, Dark Space expressed a resigned acceptance of the situation, noting that he had anticipated such a move from Take-Two based on their history of targeting fan projects. He suggested that his mod's detailed depiction of GTA 6's map might have spoiled the surprise for future players, a concern he understood from Take-Two's perspective.

As a result, Dark Space has decided to end his GTA 6 mod project entirely, acknowledging that Take-Two clearly does not want such a project to exist. He plans to focus on other content that his audience enjoys, steering clear of further GTA 5 mods related to GTA 6 to avoid similar issues.

There is now apprehension within the GTA community that other fan projects, such as the GTA 6 community mapping project, could also be targeted by Take-Two. IGN has reached out to the group for their response.

Take-Two's actions align with their previous moves against fan projects, including the recent takedown of the 'GTA Vice City Nextgen Edition' YouTube channel. A former Rockstar developer, Obbe Vermeij, has defended these actions, stating that Take-Two and Rockstar are simply protecting their commercial interests. He explained that mods like the Vice City Nextgen Edition compete directly with official releases such as the Definitive Edition, and other projects could interfere with potential future remasters.

While fans await the official release of GTA 6, they can stay updated with IGN's coverage on related topics, including insights from former Rockstar developers on the game's development timeline and potential delays, as well as discussions on the future of GTA Online and the performance expectations for GTA 6 on the PS5 Pro.
