Grand Theft Auto VI Launch Delayed to May 2026
Rockstar Games has postponed the release of Grand Theft Auto VI to May 26, 2026, shifting from its original fall 2025 target.
In an official statement, Rockstar expressed regret for the substantial delay of the highly anticipated title, projected to be a landmark entertainment launch.
"We deeply apologize for this later-than-expected release," Rockstar stated. "The overwhelming enthusiasm for a new Grand Theft Auto is truly humbling. We appreciate your support and patience as we strive to complete the game.
"Our aim with every release is to surpass your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no different. We hope you understand our need for additional time to deliver the quality you expect and deserve.
"We’re excited to share more details with you soon."
Rockstar’s announcement confirms the GTA VI release date but offers no new assets, prolonging the wait for Trailer 2. The statement also omits details on launch platforms, fueling speculation that GTA VI could launch on PC alongside PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S in May 2026.
"There’s always a risk of delays, and absolute guarantees can tempt fate," said Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two, when IGN inquired in February about confidence in the fall 2025 target. "We’re feeling optimistic about it."
In a note to investors today, May 2, Zelnick endorsed the decision to push GTA VI into Take-Two’s 2027 fiscal year.
"We fully support Rockstar Games’ choice to take extra time to fulfill their creative vision for Grand Theft Auto VI, which is set to deliver a groundbreaking entertainment experience that exceeds audience expectations.
"While we acknowledge the significance of shifting release dates and the immense global anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI, our commitment to excellence remains unwavering. As we roll out our robust pipeline, we anticipate sustained business growth and increased value for our shareholders."
The GTA VI delay frees up the second half of 2025 for other major releases, potentially giving titles like Gearbox’s Borderlands 4, EA’s Battlefield, Bungie’s Marathon, and Sony’s Ghost of Yotei more room to shine. Nintendo, gearing up for the Switch 2 launch, will likely benefit from the shifted timeline as well.
However, developers who accelerated their games to launch before GTA VI’s original fall 2025 window may face challenges. Those planning releases around May 2026 will likely need to reassess their strategies.
