Helldivers 2 Creative Director Dreams of Epic Crossovers, But Prioritizes Game's Identity

Johan Pilestedt, creative director of Helldivers 2, recently revealed his wish list of dream crossovers for the game, sparking excitement among fans. His initial suggestion, a collaboration with the tabletop game Trench Crusade, ignited a flurry of online discussion. While enthusiastic about the potential, Pilestedt cautioned that significant challenges exist in bringing such collaborations to fruition.

Trench Crusade, a wargame set in an alternate World War I with warring celestial forces, presented an intriguing possibility. However, Pilestedt later clarified that these crossover ideas were merely "fun musings," not concrete plans. He expanded his ideal crossover list to include major sci-fi franchises like Alien, Starship Troopers, Terminator, Predator, Star Wars, and Blade Runner.

The allure of crossovers in live-service games is undeniable, and Helldivers 2, with its intense alien combat, seems perfectly suited for such collaborations. However, Pilestedt emphasizes the importance of maintaining the game's unique satirical, militaristic tone. He fears that incorporating too many crossovers could dilute the Helldivers 2 identity, creating an experience that deviates from the core game.

Pilestedt remains open to both large and small crossover elements, such as individual weapons or character skins acquired via in-game currency. He stresses, however, that these are personal preferences and that no decisions have been made regarding future crossovers.

Arrowhead Studios' cautious approach is commendable, contrasting with the trend of live-service games often overwhelming players with excessive crossover content that clashes with the game's original aesthetic. The developers' prioritization of Helldivers 2's cohesive universe is a refreshing change. While the possibility of Super Earth soldiers battling Xenomorphs alongside Jango Fett or the Terminator remains a fascinating hypothetical, the ultimate decision on implementing crossovers rests solely with the developers.
