Hollow Knight: Silksong Debuts Playable Demo September 2025

Dec 23,25

IGN can exclusively reveal that Hollow Knight: Silksong will be playable at an Australian museum starting September 2025.

Team Cherry's highly anticipated follow-up, developed over many years, consistently ranks among the most-wishlisted games on Steam. The Adelaide-based studio has yet to provide a specific release date beyond the confirmed 2025 window, but we now know it will be available for hands-on demos at Melbourne's ACMI, Australia's national museum of screen culture, from September 18.

The game will be featured in ACMI's Game Worlds exhibition, a video game showcase that will also include displays exploring Silksong's design process and artistic vision.

ACMI co-curators Bethan Johnson and Jini Maxwell shared their excitement: "Since its initial announcement in 2019, Hollow Knight: Silksong has captivated indie game enthusiasts worldwide. We're honored to showcase this South Australian-developed title as a centerpiece of our Game Worlds exhibition this September.

"Our exhibition will reveal the intricate details behind the game's creation - from the hundreds of sprites that bring Hornet's movements and combat to life, to the strategic design of its most demanding boss encounters. Having the game playable within the gallery allows visitors to experience these elements firsthand. We're deeply grateful to Team Cherry for entrusting us with their work and can't wait to share it with the public."

As part of this announcement, ACMI shared an exclusive sprite sheet from Silksong, one of several design artifacts that will be displayed in the Game Worlds exhibition. IGN received permission to publish this image.

Fans won't have much longer to wait for the full release.

This development naturally raises questions about Silksong's official launch date. Many speculate the game will release before its museum debut on September 18, potentially pointing toward an August launch window.

The excitement around Hollow Knight continues to build. Silksong made a brief appearance during last month's Nintendo Switch 2 Direct presentation, shortly before Team Cherry confirmed the 2025 release timeframe.

During the hardware-focused showcase, viewers caught a fleeting glimpse of new gameplay footage alongside the updated launch confirmation. This represented the most substantial Silksong update in recent years.

Originally planned for Nintendo Switch and PC, with Xbox (including Game Pass) and PlayStation 4/5 versions announced later, Silksong has been the subject of numerous unconventional teasers. Team Cherry began 2025 with a cryptic chocolate cake recipe that left fans speculating about a potential April reveal.
