Legendary Pokemon Artist Rejoins Magic: The Gathering

May 12,25

Mitsuhiro Arita, a renowned artist celebrated for his work on the original Pokemon Trading Card Game, including the iconic Charizard card, is now lending his talents to a different realm of gaming. Arita's latest venture is a collaboration with Magic: The Gathering through a Secret Lair drop, and we're excited to offer a first look at all four cards featured in this collection.

Take a moment to flip through the gallery below to see all the cards in Arita's Secret Lair:

While this isn't Arita's first foray into Magic: The Gathering, having previously contributed a single borderless art version of Lumra, Bellow of the Woods in last year's Bloomburrow set, this new Secret Lair drop marks a significant expansion with four new cards released shortly after his initial contribution.

The cards included in this drop are not only visually stunning but also highly playable across various formats. The iconic Lightning Bolt is a staple in almost every format it's legal in, and Murktide Regent has proven to be a formidable force in both Modern and Legacy since its debut in Modern Horizons 2 in 2021. Meanwhile, Light-Paws has earned its place as a beloved Commander, and Shorikai has found a niche in numerous Vintage Cubes and currently ranks as the 20th most popular Commander according to EDHRec.

Wizards of the Coast describes this drop on its store page as follows: "With nearly 30 years of experience creating beloved art for trading card games, Mitsuhiro Arita’s work has become some of the most recognizable in the world. His first collaboration with Magic: The Gathering was on a borderless Lumra, Bellow of the Woods released in 2024’s Bloomburrow, which quickly became a fan-favorite. In this Secret Lair Drop, the legendary artist returns to showcase his iconic creature design across four remarkable cards."

As with all Secret Lair drops, this set will be available on the Secret Lair website in non-foil for $29.99 and foil for $39.99. Both versions will be available while supplies last, with sales starting on Monday, February 10 at 9am PT. Given the popularity of Secret Lairs and the switch by WOTC from a timed print-to-order system last year, these cards are likely to sell out quickly. If you're eager to get your hands on them, make sure you're ready to purchase as soon as they go live.
