NBC Exec on Suits LA Cancellation: Tough Choices Made

"Suits," the beloved legal drama that premiered on USA Network in 2011, has enjoyed a lasting appeal, further amplified by its availability on Netflix in recent years. This resurgence fueled countless binge-watching marathons, yet it couldn't propel the new spin-off, "Suits LA," to success. Despite the anticipation surrounding its launch, "Suits LA" has been canceled by NBC after just one season, as revealed in their latest fall schedule announcement. Jeff Bader, NBC's president of program planning strategy, shed light on the decision to pull the plug.

“It’s challenging to decide which shows to renew, and 'Suits LA' had a brief run, but it simply didn’t connect with audiences as we had hoped,” Bader stated in an interview with Variety following the public release of the fall schedule. “There are numerous factors at play, and while people are speculating on why it didn’t resonate, the show just doesn’t show the potential for future growth that we need.”

We looked at which ones had the potential to grow in the future. We considered their stability on linear TV, their digital performance, and whether they were on an upward or downward trajectory. These factors led us to some difficult decisions.”

He also mentioned that NBCUniversal considers moving canceled shows to their streaming service, Peacock, but "Suits LA" did not make the cut for such a transition.

When it comes to the shows that survived the cut, Bader explained the criteria that made them stand out. “We analyzed their weekly and episodic performance on both linear and digital platforms to determine which shows had the strongest ratings story,” he said. “On the creative side, our teams assessed which shows had the greatest potential to attract new viewers. These were the shows that rose to the top.”

"Suits" originally ran for nine seasons from 2011 to 2019. The revival series, "Suits LA," premiered in February and featured stars like Stephen Amell, Lex Scott Davis, Josh McDermitt, and Bryan Greenberg. Notably, original "Suits" cast members such as Rick Hoffman, David Costabile, and leading man Gabriel Macht made guest appearances. Aaron Korsh, the creator of the original series, also served as the creator and executive producer of the spin-off, which concluded its run with its final episode airing on May 11, 2025.
