Nicolas Cage Calls AI Performances a 'Dead End', as 'Robots Cannot Reflect the Human Condition'

Nicolas Cage delivered a powerful message against the encroachment of artificial intelligence in acting during his Saturn Awards acceptance speech for Best Actor in Dream Scenario. He warned fellow actors against allowing AI to influence their performances, asserting that robots are incapable of truly reflecting the human condition.

Cage expressed gratitude to director Kristoffer Borgli, praising his work on Dream Scenario, before shifting his focus to the burgeoning AI landscape. He declared his belief in the importance of human creativity and emotional expression in art, stating that AI's involvement represents a "dead end" for actors. He emphasized that allowing AI to manipulate even a small aspect of a performance would ultimately compromise the integrity and authenticity of the art, replacing it with mere financial concerns.

He passionately argued that the purpose of art, particularly acting, is to mirror the complexities of the human experience through a thoughtful and emotional creative process – a process inherently beyond the capabilities of a machine. He warned that relying on AI would result in a loss of heart, edge, and ultimately, a genuine human connection to the work. The resulting art, he argued, would be a pale imitation, reflecting only what robots dictate, not the true human condition. He concluded by urging actors to protect their authentic and honest expressions from AI interference.

Cage's concerns are echoed by other actors, particularly in the voice acting field, where AI-generated recreations of performances have become more common. Ned Luke (Grand Theft Auto 5) and Doug Cockle (The Witcher) have both expressed concerns about AI's impact on voice actors' livelihoods and the artistic integrity of their work. Cockle acknowledged AI's inevitability but warned of its inherent dangers.

The film industry's response to AI is divided. While Tim Burton expressed his unease with AI-generated art, describing it as "very disturbing," Zack Snyder advocated for embracing the technology rather than resisting it.
