Nintendo Confirms Switch 2 Controller Compatibility, Warns of Potential Issues
Nintendo has provided clarity on the compatibility of its newly unveiled GameCube controller with the Nintendo Switch 2, acknowledging potential "issues" when using it for modern games on the system. The controller was introduced during the 60-minute Nintendo Direct earlier this month, and the fine print at the time indicated it was "only compatible with Nintendo GameCube" games available in the Nintendo Switch Online retro library, not with other Switch 2 titles.
Nintendo has since elaborated on this, emphasizing that the GameCube controller is primarily intended for use with GameCube games. While it might be possible to use the controller with other Switch 2 games, players could encounter "some issues" due to the absence of "all the buttons and features" found on more contemporary controllers.
In a statement to Nintendo Life, Nintendo reiterated that "The Nintendo GameCube controller is designed for use with the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games and is an optional way to play those games." They further noted that, "Since it doesn’t have all the buttons and features found in other controllers that can be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 system, there may be some issues when playing other games. The Nintendo GameCube controller can only be used on Nintendo Switch 2 and is not compatible with Nintendo Switch."

The GameCube collection is a significant addition to the Nintendo Switch Online library, providing subscribers with access to a host of classic titles from the 2000s. At launch this summer, players can enjoy games like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2. The library is set to expand further with titles such as Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, and more in the future.
