First Look: Nintendo Switch 2 Cartridge Revealed

May 27,25

Nintendo has provided an exciting sneak peek into the world of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 with a detailed look at its game cartridge, just ahead of the console's much-anticipated launch next month. The latest video showcased on Nintendo's Today app not only reveals the new cartridge but also features an official Switch 2 carry case designed to hold up to six cartridges from both the original Nintendo Switch and the Switch 2.

As previously announced, the Switch 2 cartridges maintain the same dimensions and form as their predecessors, allowing the new console to play games from both generations with a single slot. However, a striking difference lies in the color of the cartridges: Switch 2 cartridges are distinctively red. This color choice appears to be a standard across all Switch 2 games, not limited to just the Mario Kart World cartridge seen in the video. For those without access to the Nintendo Today app, you can view the cartridge and case details shared by OatmealDome on X / Twitter.

The new cartridges also feature a printed design sticker with a Switch 2 logo, setting them apart from the original Switch cartridges. Beyond the visual distinctions, the Switch 2 cartridges share the same practical features, including Nintendo's unique foul-tasting coating intended to deter users from placing them in their mouths. Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta emphasized the safety aspect, stating to GameSpot, "We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption. We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."
