"Nintendo Switch 2 Filings Hint at Amiibo Compatibility with NFC Support"

Jun 26,25

Recent FCC filings have confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 will include Near Field Communication (NFC) capabilities, indicating continued support for Amiibo figures. As reported by The Verge, the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) module is embedded in the right Joy-Con of the new console—just like on the original Switch. This raises an exciting possibility: existing Amiibo may still unlock in-game content on the next-generation system.

Beyond NFC, the filings also confirm dual charging options via USB-C ports—one at the bottom and a newly added one on the top of the console. This aligns with expectations following the Switch 2’s initial reveal. Connectivity improvements are also on the table, as the console supports Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) with up to 80MHz bandwidth, an upgrade from the Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) found on the original model. However, there's no indication of Wi-Fi 7 or Wi-Fi 6E support in the documents.

In terms of power delivery, the Switch 2 remains rated for a maximum of 15V, although the inclusion of a 20V-capable AC adapter hints at potentially faster charging speeds—though exact performance remains unclear.

Are you planning on getting a Switch 2?

Last month, a newly uncovered Nintendo patent suggested that the Switch 2’s Joy-Con controllers could be attached upside down. The updated design appears to function similarly to how smartphones handle gyroscopic input without screen rotation lock. Unlike the original Switch, which used locking rails to secure the Joy-Cons, the new controllers reportedly rely on magnets—allowing attachment on either side.

While this change may not significantly alter hardware performance, it gives players flexibility in controller orientation. This includes positioning specific buttons and features like the headphone jack where they’re most convenient. If included in the final release, this feature could open the door to creative gameplay mechanics and control schemes.

If the Switch 2 functions as described in the patent, Nintendo will likely provide full details during an upcoming Nintendo Direct presentation. The event is scheduled for April 2 at 6am Pacific / 9am Eastern / 2pm UK time.

With no official release date yet, rumors suggest the Nintendo Switch 2 could launch between June and September. This speculation is fueled by hands-on events planned through June and statements from Greedfall 2 publisher Nacon, who indicated the console would arrive before September.

The Switch 2 was first officially revealed in January with a short trailer confirming backwards compatibility and the addition of a second USB-C port. Many details remain under wraps, including the full lineup of launch titles and the purpose of the mysterious new Joy-Con button. However, speculation around its potential use as a mouse input method has gained traction among fans and developers alike.
