Outer Worlds 2 Progressing Smoothly Amid Busy Development Period at Obsidian Entertainment

Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart recently provided an update on the development of The Outer Worlds 2 and their upcoming fantasy RPG, Avowed. Development on the highly anticipated Outer Worlds sequel is progressing well, despite challenges faced by the studio.

Obsidian Entertainment Confident in Upcoming Releases

Urquhart shared positive news about The Outer Worlds 2, stating that development is "going really well." He praised the dedicated team, many of whom worked on the original game, highlighting their experience and understanding of the project.

He acknowledged the significant hurdles the studio overcame, including the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic and the integration following Microsoft's acquisition. Juggling multiple projects—Grounded, Pentiment, and the continued development of Avowed—stretched the team thin. Urquhart candidly admitted a period of intense pressure, stating, "We were kind of a crappy developer for about a year, year and a half." At one point, the possibility of halting The Outer Worlds 2 to focus solely on Avowed was considered, but the studio ultimately decided to persevere with all projects.

Urquhart recounted the complexities of navigating acquisition, pandemic-related disruptions, and the simultaneous development of several titles. He reflected on the successful launches of Grounded and Pentiment, emphasizing that Avowed is "looking great," and The Outer Worlds 2 is "looking incredible." While no specific game details were revealed, the recent delay of Avowed to 2025 suggests potential adjustments to the release timelines of other Obsidian projects.

Announced in 2021, The Outer Worlds 2 has seen limited updates since its reveal. Urquhart acknowledged the lack of news and the possibility of a launch delay, mirroring the situation with Avowed. However, he reaffirmed Obsidian's commitment to delivering high-quality games, stating, "We will get there with all these games… Are they going to be on the timelines that we originally thought? No. But we’re going to get there, and I think that’s been proven now." Both The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed are slated for release on PC and Xbox Series S/X.
