Mastering the Art of Parrying in Avowed: A Comprehensive Guide

Few things are as satisfying in action games as perfectly parrying an enemy attack, turning their aggression into a swift counter-offensive. This guide details how to unlock and utilize the parry mechanic in Avowed.

Unlocking the Parry Ability

To parry in Avowed, you must first unlock the ability. Navigate to the "Abilities" menu, then select the "Ranger" tab. The Parry ability is located in the top middle column. Unlocking requires allocating an Ability point to any of the three core skill trees. Once this is done, Parry becomes available.

Parry has three ranks:

At level 10, the "Arrow Deflection" ability unlocks, allowing you to parry projectiles.

Executing a Parry

Parrying requires precise timing. Block immediately before an enemy attack connects. A metallic clang and a visual cue will confirm a successful parry, staggering your opponent. Mastering the timing takes practice, but it's less demanding than in games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring.

Limitations of Parrying

Not all attacks are parryable. Attacks indicated by a red circle require dodging. Furthermore, only certain weapons can parry: single-handed, two-handed weapons (excluding off-hand use), and shields (in the off-hand). Ranged weapons (guns, wands, bows) and grimoires cannot parry.

Benefits of Parrying

Parrying stuns attackers, creating an opening for significant damage. It's a highly effective defensive and offensive tactic for melee characters. However, it's less beneficial for ranged builds. Avowed's respec system allows for easy adjustments if you decide to change your combat style.
