Paul Rudd Excites Fans with Nostalgic Nod to 90s SNES Ad for Nintendo Switch 2

Apr 24,25

Nintendo has enlisted the charismatic actor Paul Rudd to generate excitement for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, featured in a new commercial that affectionately nods to a classic 90s advertisement he starred in for the Super Nintendo. The original ad, which aired back in 1991, showcased Rudd with a distinctive long black jacket, beaded necklace, and a memorable hairstyle. In the commercial, he confidently strides into a drive-in movie theater, SNES in tow, and connects it to the big screen. There, he delights the gathering crowd by playing iconic games like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, F-Zero, and Sim City. The spot memorably concludes with the SNES's famous slogan: "Now you're playing with power."

Fast forward to the present, and in the new Nintendo Switch 2 commercial, Paul Rudd, who remarkably appears quite unchanged despite the passage of 34 years, revisits his iconic look. This time, he enters a living room to connect the Nintendo Switch 2, joined by comedians Joe Lo Truglio and Jordan Carlos, along with a child affectionately calling him "Uncle Paul." They dive into the game Mario Kart World, utilizing the system's innovative GameChat feature. Throughout the ad, Rudd's friends playfully rib him about his nostalgic outfit and the over-the-top 90s commercial vibe, complete with a fog machine and a fan to recreate the original's dramatic atmosphere. The commercial wraps up with Rudd humorously updating the slogan to, "Now we're playing together," embracing the cheesiness and charm of the original ad.

IGN had the opportunity to sit down with Paul Rudd to discuss his experience filming this sequel to his iconic Nintendo commercial after more than three decades. During the interview, Rudd shared that he believes he wore his own beaded necklace in the original ad and enjoyed playing Mario Kart World on set during breaks. However, he humorously noted that he wasn't allowed to take a Nintendo Switch 2 home. You can watch the full interview here:
