PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, But Not a Home Run

If you polled gamers on which pro sports series they'd most like to see 2K tackle next, a revived NFL 2K would undoubtedly top the list. However, 2K is instead teeing off for a third time with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours of play, it's a promising offering.

HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for over a decade. This experience is evident in 2K25's polished feel. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking a truly extensive course roster (though it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is enjoyable. Minor issues, such as occasional framerate hiccups on PC, didn't significantly detract from the overall experience.

PlayThe improved EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, the right stick control scheme (pull down to wind up, push forward to strike) felt intuitive. Difficulty levels allow for both casual and challenging gameplay, with options to adjust swing forgiveness and shot shaping (using LB). Enhanced ball physics and the ability to adjust tee position add to the strategic depth. Playing as Tiger Woods, the cover athlete, provided a particularly satisfying experience.

MyCareer mode receives a welcome boost with narrative elements, similar to other sports titles. The storyline, involving a movie role alongside Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin due to licensing), offers engaging choices that impact player stats. Earned VC unlocks gear that also affects stats, alongside skill upgrades through gameplay. The addition of regularly refreshed Quests (e.g., achieving 10 consecutive birdies) adds replayability.

PlayThe MyPlayer creator, while not extensively explored in the demo, allows for reasonable character customization, now enhanced with skill trees. Multiplayer options, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, promise fun casual gameplay and asynchronous modes for players in different time zones. This echoes the social appeal of classic golf games like Links 2004.

PGA Tour 2K25 excels without being exceptional in any single area. This makes it hard to generate extreme excitement, but it appears to be a solid, enjoyable golf game. A playable demo is currently available, allowing players to experience the game firsthand before purchasing.
