The upcoming Pokémon Legends: Z-A has given us a fresh glimpse into the next installment of Game Freak's Legends series, set entirely within Lumiose City from Pokémon X and Y. Interestingly, it has already received an E10+ rating from the ESRB, sparking both genuine curiosity and plenty of humorous fan theories about what to expect.

Observant fans spotted the E10+ rating for "Fantasy Violence" on the Nintendo Switch store page. While such a rating might not raise eyebrows for other franchises, it stands out for Pokémon, whose core titles have traditionally held an "E for Everyone" rating.

Naturally, this rating has fueled all sorts of speculation—some serious, some decidedly not. It’s quite entertaining to imagine what unusual creative decisions led to the change, whether it's dialogue referencing Pokémon causing fatalities or the unlikely introduction of firearms. As several Reddit users joked, perhaps the return of horde encounters means getting ambushed by a gang of Scrafty in a Lumiose back alley.

"Ohhhh boy, Game Freak is taking off the little kiddie gloves," Reddit user RynnHamHam commented. "This ain’t your kindergartener’s Pokémon game."

Many jokes have also centered on AZ, a character with a rich backstory who is expected to appear in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. He played a key role in some of the darker narrative elements of Pokémon X and Y, as well as the history of the Kalos region.

Moving to more plausible theories, some suggest the game might feature stronger language than usual or include a casino-style minigame. Alternatively, the shadowy side of Lumiose City could simply be more prominent this time around.

My own interpretation is that it likely comes down to the "Fantasy Violence" noted by the ESRB. Though unusual for a standard Pokémon game, this rating aligns with the fighting game Pokkén Tournament DX, which also earned an E10+ for "Fantasy Violence." The real-time combat shown in Pokémon Legends: Z-A may have contributed to the slightly higher rating, as the action involves more visible physical contact between creatures.

As of now, Pokémon Legends: Z-A doesn’t have a full listing on the ESRB website, so further details are still unknown. Still, it’s fun to speculate until we learn more about Z-A’s final direction and what exactly earned it that step up in the rating scale.
