Fans of Pokémon will have plenty to enjoy over the holiday period as the latest expansion for Pokémon TCG Pocket releases today. Entitled Mythical Island, it will see you collecting themed booster packs and cards including famous faces like the mythical Mew and more.

The expansion includes new, distinctive illustrations for your cards, and of course a variety of Pokémon beyond just Mew themselves. You'll also be able to nab new binder and display board covers that show off the scenery of the titular Mythical Island.

You'll, of course, recognise Mew for its appearance in the very first Pokémon movie to receive an international release, making them a decisive fan-favourite. Not only that, but if you're more about strategy than collection you can also enjoy new ways to build your deck, with expanded battling experiences set to debut in both solo and versus battle modes.

Personally, trading card games have always eluded me as to why they're so popular. It just seems like a lot of effort to grab booster packs, continuously open them and then put them in binders before building a deck. But by that same metric, I can see the appeal in Pokémon TCG Pocket for boiling the collection experience down to its bare essentials, making it about the experience rather than the physical tedium.

Of course,e I'm sure there are also more than a few people frustrated by the idea of their precious collection being digital only. But for those who aren't, this is the perfect way to get into this decades-old franchise where it all started.
