Project Zomboid: How to Hotwire Cars

Jan 04,25

In the sprawling world of Project Zomboid, traversing the map on foot is a monumental task, best left for challenge runs. Fortunately, many vehicles remain functional, and if keys are elusive, hotwiring offers a solution.

Hotwiring is surprisingly simple, often just a few button presses. However, prerequisites exist before you can start commandeering cars. While not requiring a top-tier Project Zomboid character build, these requirements are crucial:

How Hotwiring Works in Project Zomboid

Successful hotwiring allows driving as long as fuel and vehicle condition permit, even without the correct keys. To hotwire, you need at least Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills. Alternatively, choosing the Burglar occupation during character creation bypasses these skill requirements.

Hotwiring a Car: A Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Enter the vehicle.
  2. Access the vehicle radial menu (default key: V).
  3. Select "Hotwire" and wait.

Once the prerequisites are met, follow these steps on any operable vehicle. The hotwiring process is automatic; once complete, press W to start the engine. Remember, fuel is not guaranteed, so securing gasoline is advisable.

Leveling Up Electrical and Mechanical Skills

For non-Burglar characters, skill progression requires in-game activities:

  • Electrical: Dismantle electronics (watches, radios, TVs).
  • Mechanics: Remove and reinstall mechanical parts.

Books and magazines also boost skills. Check homes, businesses, mailboxes, sheds, and bookshelves for these learning materials. Project Zomboid server admins can directly award skill XP using the "/addxp" command (syntax displayed in the chat box). Appropriate tools (like screwdrivers) are needed for dismantling and installation. Right-click vehicle parts and select "Vehicle Mechanics" for removal.
