PS5 Disc Drive Back in Stock (But Maybe Not For Long)

The PlayStation 5 disc drive is currently available at select US retailers, including Amazon and PlayStation Direct, as of mid-January 2025. However, given recent trends, this limited stock is unlikely to last.

The scarcity stems from the release of the PS5 Digital Edition in 2020 and the subsequent PS5 Pro in 2024, neither of which included a built-in disc drive. While both the PS5 Pro and the Slim models offer modularity, allowing for separate disc drive purchases, the official Sony attachment has been consistently hard to find in the US for several months.

Despite the ongoing shortage, some retailers have managed to restock. As of January 15th, the disc drive is available at Amazon US and PlayStation Direct for the MSRP of $79.99. A third-party seller on Walmart is also offering it, but at a 50% markup ($122) and with extremely limited stock.

Where to Buy a PS5 Disc Drive (Currently)

Store Price
Amazon $79.99
PlayStation Direct $79.99
Walmart (Reseller) $122

PlayStation Direct Purchase Limits

PlayStation Direct limits PS5 disc drive orders to one per customer, a common practice to deter scalpers.

The US shortage, mirroring a similar situation in the UK since late 2024, is possibly linked to the PS5 Pro's launch on November 7th. The lack of a disc drive option for the Pro model forces users who want both the Pro's performance and physical media capabilities to purchase the drive separately, contributing to the ongoing demand.

With the disc drive remaining unavailable at major retailers like Walmart, GameStop, and Best Buy, the shortage is far from resolved. The duration of the shortage remains uncertain.
