PSN on PC: Sony Unveils New Gifts, Updates Policy

Feb 20,25

Sony's PC gaming policy sparks backlash. The company's requirement for PSN tethering, even in single-player titles, and the service's limited regional availability, restrict sales of recent releases.

Sony recently announced policy adjustments. While PSN tethering for PC remains, certain relaxations are in place. These games will not require mandatory PSN tethering:

  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2
  • God of War Ragnarök
  • The Last of Us Part II Remastered
  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered

PSN tethering still offers incentives:

  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Early access to the "2099" suit for Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
  • God of War Ragnarök: Early access to the Black Bear armor set, the "Lost Things" chest, and resource packs.
  • The Last of Us Part II Remastered: Bonus points for unlocking features.
  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: The Nora Valiant costume.

In November investor calls, COO Hiroki Totoki acknowledged the controversy surrounding PSN connection requirements, emphasizing their importance for security and order. While he referenced service-based games, he didn't clarify how mandatory PSN accounts enhance security in single-player games like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 or God of War Ragnarök.

Times have changed. The gaming landscape demands a re-evaluation of these practices.
