Rockstar Games' enduring success: GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 continue their reign.

Key Highlights:

  • GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 maintain exceptionally strong sales years after their initial releases.
  • December 2024 sales data reveals GTA 5 as the third best-selling PS5 title in both the US/Canada and Europe.
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 secured the top spot as the best-selling PS4 game in the US and second place in the EU during the same period.

Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption franchises have consistently delivered critically acclaimed open-world experiences. The continued success of GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 perfectly illustrates the studio's lasting impact on the gaming industry.

Launched in 2013, GTA 5 thrust players into the criminal underworld of Los Santos. Its initial triumph was amplified by subsequent releases across various platforms and the immensely popular online multiplayer mode, solidifying its place as one of the best-selling entertainment products ever. Red Dead Redemption 2, released in 2018, transported players to the Wild West as outlaw Arthur Morgan, achieving both critical acclaim and significant commercial success.

Despite their considerable age (nearly 12 years for GTA 5 and almost 7 for Red Dead Redemption 2), both games continue to dominate sales charts. PlayStation's December 2024 download charts show GTA 5 in third place for PS5 sales (US/Canada and Europe) and fifth for PS4 sales in the same regions. Red Dead Redemption 2 led PS4 sales in the US and secured second place in the EU, trailing only EA Sports FC 25.

Continued Dominance:

European 2024 GSD data (via VGC) places GTA 5 as the fourth best-selling game of the year, climbing from fifth place in 2023. Red Dead Redemption 2 also saw a rise, moving up to seventh place from eighth. Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, recently announced that GTA 5 has surpassed 205 million units sold, while Red Dead Redemption 2 has exceeded 67 million.

This enduring popularity speaks volumes about Rockstar's ability to create timeless games. While anticipation builds for the upcoming GTA 6 (reportedly launching later this year), speculation swirls around a potential Nintendo Switch 2 port of Red Dead Redemption 2.
