Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nears Release, Says Writer

May 03,25

Exciting news for Star Wars fans: Shawn Levy, the director behind Deadpool & Wolverine, is still hard at work on his upcoming Star Wars movie. The project's writer, Jonathan Tropper, recently shared an encouraging update with Screen Rant, expressing his excitement and hinting that the film might be on its way sooner than expected. "I am [excited] too," Tropper said. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

While details about the movie remain largely under wraps, we do know it will be set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that Levy's film is a standalone story taking place in the future, approximately five or six years after the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga. This timeline makes it the first film to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker era.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Kennedy also mentioned that Levy's film will follow the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026. She's currently producing both projects, which adds to the anticipation. Another exciting detail is that Ryan Gosling is reportedly set to star in the film, adding star power to the project.

Despite Tropper's optimistic words, fans will need to exercise patience, as the movie is not expected to hit theaters until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027. Disney has been cautious with its Star Wars releases since the less-than-stellar reception of Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Several planned films, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, have been cancelled. Additionally, a Star Wars movie initially slated for late 2026 was removed from Disney's release calendar in November.

This last project will see Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey post-Rise of Skywalker. Despite some changes, including the departure of screenwriter Steven Knight, who took over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson, Rey remains a focal point for Disney's future Star Wars films according to recent reports from THR.

Disney's Star Wars plans extend even further. X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy that won't continue the Skywalker Saga, contrary to earlier reports. Fans can look forward to the next Star Wars property, Season 2 of Andor, which premieres on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple episode launch.
