Sony has announced a significant shift in its strategy for PC gaming, revealing that players will no longer need to link a PlayStation Network (PSN) account to enjoy certain PC games. This change will begin with the release of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on PC. The move comes as a response to feedback from the community, which had expressed frustration over the previous requirement. Affected titles now include Marvel's Spider-Man 2, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, God of War Ragnarök, and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. It remains uncertain whether this policy change will extend to other single-player-focused PC ports like Until Dawn or Days Gone.

Despite dropping the mandatory account linking, Sony is still keen on encouraging PC gamers to join its online ecosystem. The company has introduced new incentives for those who choose to connect their PSN accounts. For instance, players of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 can unlock the Spider-Man 2099 Black Suit and the Miles Morales 2099 Suit early. God of War Ragnarök players will receive the Armor of the Black Bear set for Kratos and a resource bundle, while The Last of Us Part II Remastered players gain 50 points for bonus features and unlock Jordan’s Jacket as a skin for Ellie. Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered players will have access to the Nora Valiant outfit. Sony plans to continue collaborating with PlayStation Studios to offer more benefits to PSN account holders. Additionally, connecting a PSN account provides access to trophy support and friend management features.

The response to Sony's presence on PC has been varied. While many fans are thrilled to experience console-exclusive titles on PC, others have been critical of the PSN account requirement, particularly in regions where PSN is not available. This issue came to a head with the Helldivers 2 community last year when Sony initially mandated a PSN account link for Steam users, only to reverse the decision shortly after due to significant backlash.
