Spider-Man 2 Debuts to 'Mixed' Steam Reviews Amid Serious PC Performance Problems

Feb 21,25

Spider-Man 2's PC port, initially touted for its impressive performance based on its system requirements, has received a mixed reception on Steam. A significant number of players report various technical problems, resulting in a "mixed" user review rating.

Currently, only 55% of Steam reviews are positive. Many users, even those with high-end GPUs like the RTX 4090 and the latest drivers, experience frequent crashes. Common complaints include game crashes to the desktop every few minutes, rendering the game unplayable for some. One user reported the game crashing during cutscenes, exhibiting extremely low frame rates, audio desynchronization, freezing, stuttering, and other performance issues. Several players have requested refunds due to these issues.

A prevalent problem seems to be frequent crashes of the game's graphics controller, even on powerful PCs. The error message often points to outdated drivers, excessive in-game settings, GPU overheating, or a game error.

PlayFurther issues reported include malfunctions with DLSS and ray tracing, extended loading times, missing textures, and audio problems. Some players claim performance stutters after extended play sessions, eventually leading to hard crashes, potentially due to memory leaks.

Nixxes, the developer responsible for the port, acknowledged the crashes on the Steam forums, directing users to their support website for troubleshooting guides. They also addressed a bug affecting photo-op missions, suggesting lowering graphics settings or resolution as a temporary fix if frame rates drop below 20 FPS. The company requests users experiencing persistent issues submit logs and crash dumps for faster troubleshooting.
