"Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Hints at Mouse Support"
Exciting news for Nintendo fans: the upcoming Switch 2 may come equipped with innovative controller features, including potential mouse support. A recently published patent from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on February 6, 2025, sheds light on these new capabilities of the Switch 2's joy-con.
New Patent Highlights Mouse Support in Joy-Con
The patent reveals that the Switch 2's joy-con could offer a mouse-like functionality, an idea sparked by the Switch 2 reveal trailer where the controller was seen being dragged across a flat surface. This feature could revolutionize how gamers interact with their console, allowing for more precise control in games that benefit from mouse input.
Switch 2 Joy-Con: Mouse Function and More
The joy-con for the Switch 2 maintains the familiar design of detachable controllers from the main console body, but with an exciting twist. The patent details that "The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface."
In addition to the mouse feature, the joy-cons can be charged using a new charging dock, accommodating up to two joy-cons simultaneously. A new magnetic attachment is also introduced, which connects the joy-con to the console and includes a wrist strap, similar to the original Nintendo Switch joy-con.
The patent also hints at a new set of controllers that resemble a standard controller split in half, each equipped with an optical sensor on the side. These can also function like a mouse and come with an attachment that can combine them into a traditional controller setup.
It's important to note that the features described in the patent may not all make it to the final product, as Nintendo has yet to officially confirm the joy-con's capabilities or other related attachments for the Switch 2.
Nintendo Direct for Switch 2
Nintendo of America announced on Twitter (X) on February 5, 2025, the official schedule for the upcoming Nintendo Direct, which will delve into details about the Switch 2. Mark your calendars for April 2, 2025, at 6 AM PT and 9 AM ET, when the event will be streamed across all official Nintendo social media platforms.
The Switch 2 trailer has already confirmed that the console will launch in 2025, though the exact release date remains under wraps. For more updates and information on the Switch 2, be sure to visit our dedicated Switch 2 page.
