Switch's Top Visual Novels and Adventures Arrive

Feb 08,25

My recent exploration of the best Switch party games in 2024, coupled with the phenomenal release of Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, inspired me to compile a list of the top visual novels and adventure games currently available on the Switch. This list encompasses both pure visual novels and adventure games with visual novel elements, representing a diverse range of regions and release years. The order is entirely arbitrary.

Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club ($49.99) + Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection

Nintendo's 2021 remakes of the Famicom Detective Club games were a revelation. Now, in 2024, Emio – The Smiling Man arrives as a stunning new entry, both physically and digitally. This lavishly produced title feels like a genuine sequel, though some might find that a drawback. The shockingly good ending fully justifies its M rating. It's a surprising highlight of my 2024 game list. Download the demo today! If you prefer to play the originals first, the Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection is readily available. Fans of classic adventure game design will find much to love.

VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action ($14.99)

A repeat appearance on my "best of" lists, VA-11 Hall-A consistently shines. Its compelling narrative, memorable music, striking aesthetic, and unforgettable characters make it a timeless classic. The Switch port is excellent, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone, regardless of their preference for point-and-click adventures. Mix drinks, change lives – it's that simple.

The House in Fata Morgana: Dreams of the Revenants Edition ($39.99)

The definitive edition of a personal favorite, The House in Fata Morgana is a pure visual novel masterpiece. This version includes the original game and substantial additions. Its success on Switch is well-deserved, as the platform provides the optimal playing experience. Prepare for a haunting gothic horror narrative and some of the most breathtaking music in gaming.

Coffee Talk Episode 1+2 ($12.99 + $14.99)

While sold separately on the eShop and physically (my imports from Japan), a North American Switch bundle justifies their inclusion as one entry. Though not quite reaching the heights of VA-11 Hall-A, Coffee Talk provides a relaxing and charming experience with a great story. If you appreciate coffee, pixel art, good music, and engaging characters, this is a must-play.

Type-Moon's Visual Novels: Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, and Mahoyo (Variable)

This entry encompasses three titles: Tsukihime, Fate/stay night Remastered, and Witch on the Holy Night (Mahoyo). All are lengthy but rewarding. For newcomers to visual novels, Fate/stay night is a great starting point, but Tsukihime's remake is highly recommended. Witch on the Holy Night follows as a strong contender.

PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo ($19.99)

Square Enix's PARANORMASIGHT surprised me with its exceptional quality. The narrative, presentation, and even some meta-elements are truly captivating. This is a top-tier mystery adventure game boasting memorable characters, excellent art, and engaging mechanics.

Gnosia ($24.99)

Often categorized as a sci-fi social deduction RPG, Gnosia blends adventure and visual novel elements. Identifying the Gnosia through observation and voting is a compelling gameplay loop. Despite some RNG-related frustrations, it's a fantastic experience.

Steins;Gate Series (Variable)

Spike Chunsoft's Steins;Gate series, particularly Steins;Gate Elite, is crucial for introducing newcomers to visual novels. While I hope for the original's release, Elite is an excellent entry point for anime fans. Playing other titles in the series is best enjoyed after experiencing Elite.

AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES and nirvanA Initiative (Variable)

This pair of adventure games from Spike Chunsoft, a collaboration between Zero Escape creator Kotaro Uchikoshi and No More Heroes artist Yusuke Kozaki, is remarkably high-quality. While a Zero Escape port is desired, these titles are well worth the full price.

NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD ($19.99)

A game best experienced blind, NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD shifts between disturbing horror and heartwarming moments. Following a young streamer's life, it's a memorable and unique adventure.

Ace Attorney Series (Variable)

Capcom has brought the entire Ace Attorney series to Switch. The sheer volume of games available makes it a must-have for fans of the genre. For newcomers, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles offers the best entry point.

Spirit Hunter: Death Mark, NG, and Death Mark II (Variable)

This horror adventure/visual novel trilogy features a striking art style and memorable stories. While the grotesque imagery might not appeal to everyone, the quality of the localization and narratives is undeniable.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim ($59.99)

A blend of real-time strategy and visual novel elements, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is a sci-fi masterpiece. Its compelling story and presentation make it a must-play experience.

This list surpasses a typical "top 10," reflecting my desire to highlight a broader range of exceptional games. I welcome suggestions for other titles that deserve inclusion. Thanks for reading! (Note: A separate otome game list is in progress.)
