Tate Mode Mini Controller: Now Play Games in Portrait!
If you’re a gamer, you’ve probably encountered the challenges of playing vertical arcade games on your phone. A modder named Max Kern has introduced a solution with his new Tate mode mini controller. But does it really solve the problem?
Traditional controllers are designed for landscape mode, akin to playing on a Switch or Steam Deck. However, classic vertical shooters and retro games often require holding your phone in portrait mode, much like scrolling through Instagram.
Max Kern's innovative approach led him to create a compact USB-C gamepad specifically for portrait-mode, or Tate mode, gaming. This controller plugs directly into your phone's USB-C port, eliminating the need for Bluetooth, charging, or extra batteries.
The Tate Mode mini controller is built around a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip, with its case and buttons 3D-printed via JLCPCB. If you're interested in replicating this project, Max offers a detailed tutorial on his YouTube channel.

The controller utilizes GP2040-CE firmware, functioning as a standard HID controller, making it compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac devices. Its versatility is impressive for such a small device.
However, there are concerns about the strain it might put on the USB-C port, as the gamepad supports part of the phone’s weight. Users must hold both the phone and controller securely to prevent potential damage to the connector over time.
On Reddit, opinions are mixed. Some users admire the ingenuity but worry about hand cramps and discomfort, while others are more open to embracing this DIY project. It's important to note that this isn't a commercial product but a DIY endeavor, with Max sharing all necessary firmware and print files on Thingiverse and Github.
