Tencent's Arthurian Knights Concept Aims to Attract Western Audience
In an insightful interview with Wccftech, the developers of Tides of Annihilation, Eclipse Glow Games, unveiled the reasoning behind the game's unique setting and thematic choices. Dive in to discover the fascinating concept behind this upcoming title and what the future holds for it.
Tides of Annihilation Aims For A Western Audience
The Central Concept Of Arthurian Myths And Knights
At Gamescom 2024, the creative minds at Eclipse Glow Games provided Wccftech with an exclusive peek into the world of Tides of Annihilation, discussing its core concept, gameplay mechanics, and the potential for an expansive anthology.
Despite their roots in China, Eclipse Glow Games chose a Western setting for Tides of Annihilation to meet the strategic goals set by their financier, Tencent. "Tencent invested in both Tides of Annihilation and Black Myth: Wukong, but with different markets in mind," explained the game's producer. "While Black Myth: Wukong was tailored for the Chinese audience, we aimed Tides of Annihilation at the West, leveraging the timeless appeal of Arthurian legends." This decision led to the central theme of knights, evolving into a narrative centered around King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table.
Set in a post-apocalyptic version of modern-day London, the game follows Gwendolyn, seemingly the last human survivor amidst an Outworld invasion. Tides of Annihilation blends a contemporary setting with rich fantasy elements, drawing heavily from Arthurian mythology.
Devil May Cry-inspired Combat And Over 30 Bosses
Fans of action-RPGs will notice that Tides of Annihilation's combat system echoes the dynamic style of Devil May Cry. The developers confirmed this influence, stating, "It's definitely more like Devil May Cry," while also introducing a difficulty selection feature to cater to a broader audience. This ensures that even less experienced players can enjoy the action without feeling overwhelmed.
Players can customize their combat style with four different weapons and over ten unique Knights to assist Gwendolyn. As she navigates the devastated streets of London, Gwendolyn discovers her ability to command the legendary Knights of the Round Table, adding a strategic layer to the gameplay. With more than 30 bosses, each boasting unique abilities, players are promised a challenging and engaging experience. "Players will have to prepare for very challenging boss fights," the developers emphasized.
Plans Of Creating An Anthology
Eclipse Glow Games also expressed their ambition to expand the Tides of Annihilation universe into an anthology. They envision future titles exploring different settings and mythologies, each with a new protagonist, yet retaining the core concept of an Outworld invasion. "We're hoping that the success of the first game will pave the way for more mythological adventures," they shared, signaling their commitment to a broader narrative arc.
Currently in its beta phase, Tides of Annihilation is slated for a 2026 release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Players will join Gwendolyn on her quest to unravel the mysteries of the invasion, not only saving London but also the intertwined fantasy realm of Avalon.
