Top 10 PS1 Games Now on Nintendo Switch - SwitchArcade
Well, here it is, friends. This will be the final installment of my retro game eShop lists, mainly because I'm running out of retro consoles with a diverse selection of games to showcase. But don't worry, I've saved one of the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's first foray into the console market exceeded all expectations, amassing a library so rich with iconic games that they continue to be re-released today. Sure, these games gave Nintendo a run for their money a quarter-century ago, but now, it's all smiles as everyone can enjoy them on their platforms of choice. Here are ten of our favorites, listed in no particular order. Let's dive into the PlaySta-Show!
Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)
Klonoa is a gem that might not have received the acclaim it deserved, yet it didn't go completely unnoticed. It's one of the more successful 2.5D platformers on the console. You take on the role of a floppy-eared cat-creature navigating the dream world to thwart a menacing threat. The game boasts vibrant visuals, snappy gameplay, intriguing bosses, and a surprisingly poignant story. The sequel, originally on PlayStation 2, isn't quite as strong, but you'll need to purchase both as a set.
Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)
This is a landmark title that propelled Japanese RPGs into the Western mainstream, becoming Square Enix's biggest success and a key factor in the PlayStation's meteoric rise. While there's a remake out there, it's important to distinguish it from the original Final Fantasy VII experience, which still holds up despite its dated graphics. It's easy to understand why this game captured so many hearts.
Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)
Another heavyweight from the PlayStation era, Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise and thrust it into the limelight. While later entries in the series became more whimsical and self-referential, this initial installment retains a more grounded, GI Joe-like charm. It's not just a compelling narrative; it's also a fun game to play. If you enjoy it, you can also find the PlayStation 2 sequels on the Switch.
G-Darius HD ($29.99)
Let's delve a bit into niche territory with G-Darius. This game successfully transitioned Taito's classic shoot 'em up series into 3D, maintaining its charm despite the dated polygonal graphics. The game's vibrant colors, engaging enemy capture mechanic, and inventive bosses make it a standout shooter.
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)
I could fill this list with Square Enix titles, but I'll stick with Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy VII to give other games a chance. Chrono Cross faced the daunting task of following up one of the most beloved RPGs ever, Chrono Trigger. It didn't quite reach the same heights, but it stands on its own as a beautifully crafted RPG with a vast, albeit underdeveloped, cast and one of the best video game soundtracks ever.
Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)
I'm a Mega Man fan through and through, but I'm aware my nostalgia might cloud my judgment. When recommending games to newcomers, I focus on the series' best entries. In the Mega Man X series, Mega Man X and Mega Man X4 stand out. X4 strikes a balance that the series often struggles to maintain, though the next game veered off course. The Legacy Collections are a great way to explore these classics.
Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)
Tomba! is an intriguing platformer with adventure game elements, offering both engaging action and challenging puzzles. Interestingly, despite being a Sony-published title, Tomba! isn't owned by them. The game starts off breezy but ramps up the challenge, a hallmark of its creator, who also developed Ghosts ‘n Goblins. It's great to see it available once more.
Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)
Though Grandia debuted on the SEGA Saturn, the PlayStation version forms the basis of this HD release. Developed by many of the same minds behind Lunar, Grandia offers a refreshing, light-hearted RPG experience in contrast to the darker themes prevalent at the time. Its combat system, an evolution of Lunar's, is particularly satisfying. The collection also includes another solid title.
Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)
Lara Croft became an icon during the PlayStation era, starring in five games. The quality varied, but the original Tomb Raider remains my favorite for its focus on exploration over action. This remastered collection includes the first three games, allowing you to decide for yourself.
moon ($18.99)
Let's end with a deeper cut. Originally released only in Japan, moon is an anti-RPG that deconstructs the genre. More of an adventure game, it has a punk aesthetic and isn't always fun in the traditional sense. Yet, it offers a profound message if you persevere. It's fantastic that we finally have an English version.
And that's the list, friends. Which PlayStation 1 games do you enjoy on the Switch? Share your thoughts in the comments below—we love hearing from you! I hope you've enjoyed this series as much as I've enjoyed writing it. As always, thank you for reading!
