Joseph Kosinski, acclaimed director of Top Gun: Maverick and Tron: Legacy, is reportedly set to take the helm of a new Miami Vice movie for Universal, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Nightcrawler writer-director Dan Gilroy has been tapped to pen the script, building on an initial draft by Top Gun: Maverick screenwriter Eric Warren Singer. Gilroy, who has recently contributed to multiple episodes of the Star Wars series Andor—created by his brother Tony—is now poised to bring his talents to this iconic franchise.

Miami Vice, the groundbreaking NBC police series, was created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann. Airing from 1984 to 1989, the show starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as the stylish detectives Crockett and Tubbs. It revolutionized television with its distinctive visual and auditory style, setting new standards for what a TV series could achieve. The series was previously adapted into a film in 2006, directed by Michael Mann and featuring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell.

While details about the new Miami Vice film are currently sparse, it's clear that it won't be Kosinski's immediate next project. Following the release of his upcoming film F1 in June, Kosinski will have ample time to refine his vision for this reboot, perhaps even choosing the perfect Ferrari to match the film's high-octane vibe.
