Top-Rated GBA & DS Games to Enhance Your Switch Experience

Feb 02,25

A curated selection of retro Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles now available on the Nintendo Switch eShop. While Nintendo Switch Online boasts a robust Game Boy Advance library, this list focuses on titles independently released on the Switch eShop. We've chosen ten standout games – four GBA and six DS – presented without any specific ranking.

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Part of Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. Although the original Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge in my opinion, this GBA iteration is a solid alternative. A worthwhile play-through for comparison, offering a potentially more streamlined experience. Steel Empire remains enjoyable regardless of the platform, even appealing to those who aren't typically drawn to shooters.

Mega Man Zero – Included in Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

While the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Game Boy Advance saw the rise of a true Mega Man successor. Mega Man Zero initiates an excellent side-scrolling action series, albeit with some initial presentation quirks. These imperfections are refined in later installments, but the first game remains the ideal starting point.

Mega Man Battle Network – Included in Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A Mega Man double-feature is justified here, as Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network offer vastly different yet equally compelling gameplay. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The virtual world concept within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While the series' later entries show diminishing returns, the original remains highly entertaining.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Included in Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

Another collection warranting a complete playthrough, but Aria of Sorrow stands out as a personal favorite. For me, it often surpasses even the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. The soul-collecting mechanic encourages exploration, and the enjoyable gameplay makes grinding less tedious. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal, solidifying its place as a top-tier GBA title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

The original Shantae gained cult status, but limited distribution hindered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, released on DSiWare, significantly broadened its audience. This title successfully established Shantae, ensuring her continued presence across console generations. Interestingly, it has roots in an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Included in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Arguably a GBA game in its origins (though not initially localized), Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama. The blend of silly humor and engaging narratives is a winning formula. The first game is exceptional, though later installments also hold merit.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick boasts equally strong writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, players must utilize their abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery surrounding their own death. This wild ride is highly recommended.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

A top-tier Nintendo DS title, ideally experienced on its original hardware. The Switch version serves as a viable alternative for those without access to a DS, and it's a game well worth playing.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Included in Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all the Nintendo DS Castlevania games. Dawn of Sorrow is highlighted due to the improved button controls replacing the original's touch controls. However, all three DS games in this collection are recommended.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Included in Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

A franchise that thrives on the DS/3DS ecosystem, but Atlus's Switch port is a successful adaptation. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG, with Etrian Odyssey III being the largest and a worthwhile experience.
