Nintendo Considers All Options For Future Wind Waker Ports

Nintendo confirmed during its April 2 Switch 2 Direct that Wind Waker's GameCube edition will join the new console's library. This announcement sparked speculation about the HD version's potential absence from Switch 2.

Nintendo of America's Senior VP of Product Development Nate Bihldorff addressed these concerns during a New York press event. Kinda Funny Games Daily host Tim Gettys shared details from their conversation in an April 9 episode.

Gettys relayed: "When I asked if the NSO release prevents a Switch 2 port of the Wii U version, Bihldorff immediately responded 'no, all options remain open.' While no official confirmation exists, multiple possibilities are being considered."

Originally Launched in 2002

The GameCube original debuted in Japan (2002) and Western markets (2003). Wind Waker HD arrived on Wii U ten years later in 2013 with numerous enhancements: HD graphics upgrade (from 480p), improved lighting, gyroscopic weapon controls, optimized sailing mechanics, and gameplay refinements. Since GameCube titles remain Switch 2 exclusives, Wii U's HD version might represent Switch owners' sole opportunity to experience Wind Waker.

Nintendo recently rebranded its subscription classics as "Nintendo Classics." The company announced: "Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers will soon access The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-ZERO GX, and SOULCALIBUR II on Switch 2, with additional titles coming later." Selected games will feature customizable options including retro visual filters and widescreen display modes.
