Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting!

BG3's Patch 7 Brings In Over A Million Mods Shortly After Rollout

The release of Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7 has ignited a modding frenzy. Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke reported over one million mod installations within 24 hours of the patch's September 5th launch. "Modding is pretty big," Vincke tweeted (X). This figure was later surpassed, with mod.io founder Scott Reismanis reporting over 3 million installs and counting.

This surge is fueled by Patch 7's inclusion of Larian's official Mod Manager, simplifying mod installation and management within the game. The separate Steam-based modding toolkit, utilizing Larian's Osiris scripting language, empowers modders to create custom content, including scripts and basic debugging, with direct publishing capabilities.

Enhanced Modding Capabilities

A community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (Nexus Mods) expands modding possibilities further, offering a full level editor and reactivating previously restricted editor features. While Larian initially limited tool access, stating they are "a game development company, not a tools company," the community's enthusiasm has been undeniable.

Cross-Platform Modding on the Horizon

Larian is actively developing cross-platform modding support, aiming for a PC launch initially, followed by consoles. Vincke acknowledges the complexity, requiring compatibility across platforms and navigating console submission processes.

Beyond the modding boom, Patch 7 includes numerous improvements: refined UI, new animations, expanded dialogue options, bug fixes, and performance enhancements. With future updates planned, Larian's commitment to modding and overall game improvement is evident.
