Conquering Zhang Jiao in Dynasty Warriors: Origins: A Comprehensive Guide

One of the initial significant hurdles in Dynasty Warriors: Origins is the battle against Zhang Jiao, leader of the Yellow Turbans. This guide provides a strategic approach to overcoming this formidable foe.

Phase 1: A One-on-One Duel

This initial phase unfolds as a solo confrontation in a spacious wasteland. Zhang Jiao employs sorcery, launching projectiles across the arena. His attacks vary based on your distance:

  • Close Range: He summons four stones, demanding swift evasion.
  • Long Range: He unleashes eight stones in pairs, easily dodged by circling him.

Maintaining a safe distance is crucial when he summons a large volley of stones to avoid substantial damage. While primarily focused on keeping you at bay, he does possess close-range attacks, including simple combos (parryable) and an area-of-effect (AOE) pushback attack. A white glow signals his AOE charge; retreat immediately.

Later, he employs unblockable attacks (red aura), summoning numerous rocks and clones. The best strategy is to maintain distance and wait for the attacks to conclude. A sword is the recommended weapon for optimal damage output.

Resource Management: Monitor your health carefully. You likely have limited healing opportunities (around four, depending on skill upgrades). Meat buns are available near the arena entrance; utilize these during recovery periods between attacks.

Phase 2: Aided Assault

Unlocking Musou Rage initiates Phase 2, where the Yellow Turbans join Zhang Jiao. Fortunately, your own army arrives to provide support. This is an ideal time to heal using the meat buns. Zhang Jiao introduces tornadoes that can disrupt your positioning; be mindful of these while engaging his troops.

Zhang Jiao will attempt a Grand Tactic, demanding the defeat of 300 soldiers within a short timeframe. Failure results in a devastating attack. He'll also summon lightning strikes; observe the warning ring on the ground and evade promptly. Musou Mode is highly effective for rapidly eliminating soldiers, but basic Musou might be more practical due to time constraints.

Successfully thwarting his Grand Tactic twice brings Zhang Jiao back into the fray with his Phase 1 tactics. With your army's aid, defeating him should be relatively straightforward, concluding Chapter 1.

Victory Achieved!

This strategy should help you triumph over Zhang Jiao in Dynasty Warriors: Origins, available now on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
