"Elden Ring Movie in Talks, Martin's Involvement Limited - IGN Fan Fest 2025"

George R. R. Martin, the acclaimed author behind the *Game of Thrones* saga, has once again hinted at the possibility of an *Elden Ring* movie, while also revealing a significant obstacle to his potential involvement. Martin's creative input was instrumental in shaping the universe and backstory of FromSoftware’s *Elden Ring*, which soared to become one of the top-selling video games of 2022. Both FromSoftware and publisher Bandai Namco prominently featured Martin's role in their marketing efforts, with the game's credits proudly stating that the world of *Elden Ring* was co-created by FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R. R. Martin.

During IGN Fan Fest 2025, when asked about his potential return for an *Elden Ring* sequel, Martin cleverly pivoted the conversation towards the possibility of a movie adaptation. He stated, "Well, I can't say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of *Elden Ring*." This tease isn't the first of its kind, as Martin has previously hinted at such a project. Furthermore, FromSoftware's president, Hidetaka Miyazaki, has expressed openness to an *Elden Ring* adaptation, provided it involves a "very strong partner." Miyazaki admitted to *The Guardian* that neither he nor FromSoftware possess the expertise to venture into a different medium like film, emphasizing the need for a trusted collaborator.

However, Martin's potential involvement in an *Elden Ring* movie faces a substantial challenge: his ongoing commitment to *The Winds of Winter*, the long-awaited sixth book in his *A Song of Ice and Fire* series. Speaking to IGN, Martin admitted, "We'll see if that [the *Elden Ring* movie] comes to pass and what the extent of my involvement was, I don't know. I'm a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do." Fans have been eagerly awaiting *The Winds of Winter* for over a decade, and Martin himself has acknowledged the delays, saying in December, "Unfortunately, I am 13 years late. Every time I say that, I’m [like], 'How could I be 13 years late?' I don’t know, it happens a day at a time." Despite these delays, Martin remains dedicated to finishing the book, even as some speculate that it may never see the light of day.

The wait for *The Winds of Winter* has been increasingly frustrating, especially since the last book, *A Dance With Dragons*, was released in 2011—the same year HBO's *Game of Thrones* series debuted and brought even more attention to Martin's fantasy world.

Martin also shed light on his role in crafting *Elden Ring*'s world during his conversation with IGN. He explained how FromSoftware approached him for his expertise in worldbuilding, stating, "… when they came to me, FromSoftware, they wanted the world. They knew the action of *Elden Ring* that the players would get into would be in the ‘present.’ But something had created that present, had created that world. So where did that world come from? And I've done a lot of world building, most notably on Westeros and the backgrounds of *A Song of Ice and Fire* and *Game of Thrones*. And I like doing world building. So what had happened 5,000, 10,000 years before the current day action in *Elden Ring* that led them to that place? And I had some ideas about the magic and the runes. There was a lot about runes. And I worked it all out."

Martin described the collaborative process with FromSoftware, which involved multiple sessions and iterations. He noted that not everything he wrote made it into the game, hinting at potential material for future projects, saying, "Yeah, I think especially when you're world building, there's always more that you actually see on the screen. And that's true of any of these big epic fantasies. I mean, you look at Tolkien and there are hundreds of pages of past history before you get to even the era of the Hobbit and dozens of kings and wars and things like that."
