Ezra Miller and Lynne Ramsay Collaborate on New Vampire Film; Discusses Hollywood Comeback

The Flash actor Ezra Miller is planning a Hollywood comeback after facing allegations of abuse and harassment, along with other controversies, starting in 2020.

Miller drew attention at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, as reported by Variety. Their appearance at the premiere of Die My Love, directed by We Need to Talk About Kevin filmmaker Lynne Ramsay, was one of their most prominent public outings in years, hinting at a potential return to the film industry.

Miller rose to fame with roles in films like 2012’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower and gained prominence as the Flash in multiple DC films and Credence Barebone in the Fantastic Beasts Harry Potter spinoff series. Public concern grew after footage surfaced appearing to show the actor choking a fan, sparking confusion and alarm, followed by a series of controversies in subsequent years.

In 2022, Miller faced legal issues in Hawaii, including arrests for disorderly conduct and harassment in March and second-degree assault weeks later. A felony burglary charge in Vermont followed in August 2022. Miller issued an apology for their actions, citing “complex mental health challenges” and a commitment to “returning to a healthy, safe, and productive phase of life.”

Miller’s most recent major role was in The Flash, which premiered in April 2023. Since then, they have largely stayed out of the spotlight, with notable appearances at Cannes and June’s Filming Italy Sardegna. In an interview with Italian outlet Lo Speciale Giornale at the latter, Miller shared “tentative” plans to re-enter the film industry.

“I’ve been focusing on writing, which suits the solitude I’ve found helpful,” Miller said.

A key part of their comeback involves a new project with Ramsay, where they will share writing credits.

“I attended Cannes to support my dear friend Lynne Ramsay, one of the greatest living filmmakers,” Miller said. “We’re working on a new film together, which will likely be my first project. Writing has been a refuge for me, as it allows for solitude.”

Miller explained their presence at Cannes was at Ramsay’s request, emphasizing loyalty to “friends, loved ones, and comrades above all else.” They admitted reluctance to attend, describing Cannes as a “challenging reentry point.”

“We’ve become overly focused on perception—how we see ourselves and how others see us,” Miller said. “I believe in moving beyond that and being a true friend. Those who supported me have my lifelong loyalty.”

They added: “I’m also grateful for learning who wasn’t there for me. In this industry, you encounter many who don’t care about your well-being. While I deeply regret much of what I did and what happened, I’m thankful for the lessons learned from that difficult time.”

Ramsay revealed to the Los Angeles Times that their upcoming project is a vampire film featuring Miller as the lead. It remains unclear if Miller will pursue additional acting roles or other projects.

In April of that year, the Warner Bros. filmmaker praised Miller’s performance in the DC film, calling it “one of my best experiences working with an actor.” He also advocated against recasting the Flash role for any potential sequel.
