Game Gardened: Tango Gameworks' Rescue By Embracer
Krafton Inc. Acquires Tango Gameworks, Saving Hi-Fi Rush!
In a surprising turn of events, Krafton Inc., the publisher behind PUBG, has acquired Tango Gameworks, the studio behind the critically acclaimed rhythm action game Hi-Fi Rush. This acquisition comes just months after Microsoft announced the studio's closure, a decision met with widespread shock and disappointment.
Tango Gameworks to Continue Hi-Fi Rush and Explore New Projects
Krafton's acquisition secures the future of Hi-Fi Rush, ensuring the popular IP will continue to be developed. Krafton stated their intention to collaborate closely with Xbox and ZeniMax for a smooth transition, promising continued support for Tango Gameworks' team and its projects. The press release confirmed Tango will continue development of the Hi-Fi Rush IP and explore new game concepts.
Krafton emphasized their excitement about this strategic move, highlighting its significance in their global expansion and their first major investment in the Japanese video game market. They stated: "KRAFTON, Inc. today welcomed the talented people of Tango Gameworks to their team...This strategic move will include the rights to Tango Gameworks’ acclaimed IP, Hi-Fi RUSH."
The acquisition marks a remarkable turnaround for Tango Gameworks, which was slated for closure by Microsoft in May. Founded by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, the studio is also known for The Evil Within series and Ghostwire: Tokyo. Despite the studio's successes, including the 2023 release of Hi-Fi Rush, Microsoft's decision to shut it down was part of a larger restructuring effort focused on "high-impact titles".
Krafton has assured fans there will be no impact on The Evil Within, The Evil Within 2, Ghostwire: Tokyo, or the original Hi-Fi Rush game. These titles will remain available on existing platforms and storefronts. Microsoft has also issued a statement, saying, "We’re working with Krafton to enable the team at Tango Gameworks to continue to build games together, and we look forward to playing their next great game."
Hi-Fi Rush 2? The Future Remains Unclear
Hi-Fi Rush’s critical acclaim, including awards such as "Best Animation" at the BAFTA Games Awards and "Best Audio Design" at The Game Awards, underscores its potential. While rumors of a sequel were circulating before the acquisition, an official announcement regarding Hi-Fi Rush 2 is yet to be made. Krafton’s commitment to supporting Tango Gameworks' innovation and creating "fresh and exciting experiences" leaves the possibility open.
The acquisition of Tango Gameworks by Krafton represents a significant development in the gaming industry, highlighting the value of creative studios and the potential for unexpected partnerships. The future of Tango Gameworks, and the possibility of a Hi-Fi Rush sequel, will be closely watched by fans worldwide.
