Gearbox's Plans for Borderlands 4: No Open World

Mar 29,25

Fans of the beloved looter shooter series are eagerly awaiting the fourth installment of the Borderlands franchise. The initial trailer showcased numerous advancements, including expanded scale and exploration possibilities. However, it's important to note that Borderlands 4 is not a fully open-world game.

Gearbox Software co-founder Randy Pitchford has explicitly stated that he would not label Borderlands 4 as an "open world." He believes the term carries connotations that do not align with the game's design. While Pitchford did not detail the exact differences between Borderlands 4 and open-world games, he emphasized a clear distinction between moments of guided gameplay and periods of unrestricted exploration.

Despite this, Borderlands 4 is poised to be the most ambitious entry in the series yet. Players will enjoy seamless movement across all areas without loading screens, enhancing the sense of freedom. The developers have focused on making every aspect of the adventure more structured and engaging, aiming to prevent aimless wandering in the vast universe.

While an exact release date has not been confirmed, the game is expected to launch in 2025. Borderlands 4 will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, promising an exciting addition to the franchise for gamers on these platforms.
